Richard Holbrooke In Serious Condition After Torn Aorta Surgery At George Washington University Hospital

Richard Holbrooke, 69-year-old U.S. diplomat was reportedly in seroius condition after undergoing a heart surgery. International news reports said that Holbrooke undergone more than 20 hours of heart surgery to repair a tear in his aorta. It was said that Holbrooke had suddenly collapsed Friday morning during a meeting with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. He was then taken to George Washington University Hospital only a few blocks away from the State Department.

The operation started Friday and it was completed Saturday morning. He was described as being stable on Saturday night, but was said to be in serious condition.

Meanwhile, President Barack Obama said in a statement that “Richard Holbrooke is a towering figure in American foreign policy, a serious member of my Afghanistan and Pakistan team, and a tireless public servant who has won the admiration of the American people and people around the world.”

Wikipedia describes torn aorta as a condition that causes blood to flow between the layers of the wall of the aorta and force the layers apart. An operation bringing layers of the aorta back together is required so that no further dissection can occur. Furthermore, if the condition is not corrected, it can lead to rapid loss of life.
