According to several international news reports, a Rhodesian Ridgeback dog named Etana gave birth to 17 puppies in Ebereschenhof, near Berlin, Germany on September 28. Its owner, Ramona Wegemann was thrilled but fatigued having to feed them with a bottle because their mother could not supply the demand for milk of all the 17 puppies.

According to Wegemann, after she “finished feeding the last puppy, the first was hungry again.” It kept her barely sleeping for just a couple of minutes without interruption in about four weeks to make sure all the puppies will survive.

Wegemann gave each puppy a bottle of milk at least five times a day. When the puppies were not hungry, they wanted to be entertained, Wegemann said.

Wegemann said that when dogs give birth to so many puppies, several of them do not survive within the first week. “But all of our puppies survived. This is incredible and wonderful,” the 32-year-old said.

It took Etana a full 26 hours to give birth to all the puppies, making Wegemann baffled and amazed. “The birth of the puppies was very special. All puppies were born naturally, no cesarean was necessary,” Wegemann added.
