US Rep. Gabrielle Giffords has been taken out from her hospital room on Thursday, to get sunlight from the first time after the Arizona shooting, and will be on her way to a rehabilitation center in Houston on Friday, as announced on her ‘Recovery update’ Facebook page.

A photo (shown below) was also published on that page on the same day, showing the congresswoman, along with her husband, Mark Kelly, viewing the mountains of Catalina Mountains from the deck of University Medical Center (UMC) in Tucson, where she is being treated for nearly two weeks.

Latest news reports revealed that Rep. Gabrielle is making a ‘remarkable progress’, can now move her both hands, and somehow communicate with people around her, as well as getting sleeping hours.

“She is beginning to stand with assistance, she is scrolling through an iPad — these are all fantastic advances for her. They do show higher cognitive function,” UMC Neurology chief Dr. Michael Lemole said on a news conference.

Also according to the Facebook page, Rep. Giffords will leave UMC on Friday at about 9.15 a.m, and will be heading to Davis-Monthan Air Force Base via an ambulance for her flight to Houston.

A group of Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) motorcycle riders decided to escort the ambulance voluntarily to the base, which she rode with back in May 2009, to escort the remains of Civil War-era veterans from Tucson to Sierra Vista.

Joining Rep. Giffords’ travel via a Challenger plane are Mark Kelly, her husband; Gloria Giffords, her mother; Dr. Peter Rhee, her trauma surgeon at UMC; Tracy Culbert, one of her nurses in UMC’s ICU; C.J. Karamargin, her communications director; and Pia Carusone, her chief of staff.

Rep. Giffords’ flight is expected to arrive at William P. Hobby Airport at around 1:15 p.m. (Houston time), and she will be taken to TIRR Memorial Hospital via a helicopter.
