Foursquare is a location-based social networking website based on software for mobile devices. Foursquare users can check in to different real-world locations via their smart phones, share their experiences with friends, post updates to Twitter and Facebook, and earn points and collect virtual badges, and be the mayor of the Foursquare venue if they have the most number of “check ins” to that location.

Foursquare Day is a global social media holiday that was first observed on April 16, 2010 in several cities around the world. The day April 16 was chosen due to the fact that four squared is equal to 16 and it corresponds to the 4th month and 16th day of the year.
