Pope John Paul II stamps limited edition to be issued by PhilPost

Manila, Philippines – A limited edition of Pope John Paul II stamps will be released by the Philippine Postal Corporation (PhilPost) this coming May.

According to ABS-CBN on Saturday, April 30, 2011, PhilPost will feature the life of Pope John Paul II on the upcoming Papal stamps.

“In his 26 years of pontificate, the Philippines [has] found a special place in the heart of Pope John Paul II whom he considered a bastion of Christianity in Asia.” the PhilPost was quoted in a press statement.

Apparently, Philippines is among the more than 120 countries visited by Pope John Paul II during his time, which he visited twice in 1981 and in 1995, celebrating World Youth Day.

Besides Manila, Pope John Paul II was also noted to have visited different places of the country including Bacolod City, Bataan, Baguio City, Cebu City, Davao City and Iloilo City.

Pope John Paul II, born Karol Josef Wojtyla was elected as pope on October 16, 1978, and is being considered as a very well-loved pope by Catholics.

He passed away on April 2, 2005, and is set to be beatified on May 1, 2011 by his successor Pope Benedict XVI, and will be called Blessed John Paul II.
