Sony PlayStation Vita portable game machine is now available at major electronic stores in Japan since Saturday, December 17, 2011, according to reports by several international news sites on Sunday, December 18.

Thousands of game enthusiasts reportedly lined up early, outside major electronic chains in Japan, to be among the first to buy the latest Playstation device. Most buyers who lined up had already ordered online and wanted to play with the new Vita early.

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. is hoping that Playstation Vita will help the company to offset the company’s losses. For the fourth straight year, Sony projects more than $1 billion loss for the fiscal year through March 2012.

Playstation Vita has a touchscreen interface and is a motion-sensitive handheld device. The new PS Vita is a successor model to the PlayStation Portable. PS Vita allows gamers to connect over cellphone networks, WiFi hotspots, and use GPS location-tracking technology. It has front and back cameras, a touch pad on the back and two knob-like joysticks.

Reports added that the PS Vita will be available in North America and Europe on February 22, 2012.
