Jack Taylor, a Division III player, scores 138 points on Tuesday, November 21, 2012 and has set a new record in the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association), which eventually led his Grinnell College basketball team to win against the Faith Baptist Bible (FBB), 179-104. As noted at NBCSports.com on Tuesday, Jack Taylor, who stands at 5’10” and is a sophomore from Black River Falls, Wisconsin, made 27 points out of his 71 3-point attempts, scored 52 points of 108 attempts from the floor, along with seven out of 10 free throw attempts that night. He scored 58 points by halftime.
According to the report, the previous highest score record for a Grinnell player was 89 points and was made by Griffin Lentsch on November 19, 2011 when the team played against Principia College. Bevo Francis of Rio Grande had a NCAA record of 116 points against Ashland Junior College back in 1953.
“I started off the game cold, I went 0-for-4, then I thought I started warming up and thought I had an OK game. I thought I had 30 at halftime and coach (David Arseneault) said I had 58. I was surprised.” Jack Taylor was quoted as saying in an NBC Sports interview this Wednesday, who became an Internet sensation after the game.
“My teammates said they wanted to give me the ball if I was going to keep making them, so I’m fortunate to have such unselfish teammates. The rest was really a blur. The basket seemed huge. There was a stretch where I hit eight in a row and that’s when I knew I had really gotten going.” Taylor added.
Based on his profile at Pioneers.Grinnell.edu, Jack Taylor was chosen as Coulee Conference Player of the Year twice, when he was a junior and a senior at Black River Falls High School. He made a total of 1,295 points, which ranked second all-time in school history, and also played on the Division 2 WBCA North All-Star Team.
Taylor was also the team captain, team MVP, and averaged 24 points per game which ranked third in the state of Wisconsin. He also won the Presidential Academic Award and becoming a National Honor Society inductee. In his last game last Saturday when his team played against Crown College, he scored 28 points.
