Plane crashes at Nevada National Championship Air Races and Air Show 2011 (Video)

A plane crashed on Friday, September 16, 2011 during the Nevada Air Show 2011, as shown in the video below; with officials telling reports that the incident is a “mass casualty situation”.

As noted at US news sites, the plane plunged into the spectators’ area at around 4:30 p.m. (local time) in front of the grandstand during the National Championship Air Races 2011 in Reno, Nevada.

Air show spokesman Mike Draper was interviewed by Anderson Cooper during his show at CNN, and identified the plane as a P-51 Mustang, a WW-II fighter plane and the pilot was Jimmy Leeward.

According to his Facebook page, Leeward has been racing airplanes since the mid-70s and his latest wall post is inviting everyone to watch the air show live. Comments are now pouring after the incident.

Fire fighters and rescue teams immediately rushed to the area Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) spokesman Ian Gregor reported that there are “multiple casualties and injuries”.

As of this writing, there is no confirmation about the exact number of casualties and injured spectators and the cause of the incident is still for thorough investigation.
