For supporting breast cancer awareness by using pink whistles, 143 referees of the Pacific Northwest Football Officials Association (PNFOA) have been reprimanded, several sports news sites reported on Friday.

Reports said that Washington Officials Association (WOA) commissioner Todd Stordahl revoked the majority of their playoff games for the next two years and their organization was put on probation for the next three years. The disciplinary action came seven months after the conclusion of the football season in which the referees used the whistles.

According to reports, Stordahl threatened the group with a two-game ban and the possibility of losing two game checks seven months ago when the referees started wearing the pink whistles. However, he did not continue with his plan and said that no referee would be fined for using the whistles. Seven months later, this decision came.

“They chose not to ask for permission, not to go the right route,” Stordahl was quoted saying. “It sends the wrong message to kids that are playing the game. ‘If they broke the rules why can’t I do the same?'”

The referees reportedly argued that there is no specific rule governing the color of the whistles. PNFOA President Jeff Mattson reportedly said that many of the officials donated game checks to breast-cancer-related causes because many had been affected by the cancer in some ways.
