MANILA-Philippines, The EDSA People Power Revolution celebration 2011 have kicked off with the unveiling of His Excellency Cardinal Sin’s monument at the area of Burgos Avenue and Roxas Boulevard, Rizal Park. This is after the flag raising. Local TV sites featured the momentous event, February 25, 2011.

There are various events scheduled for the day that would encourage the Filipino people to once again commemorate the historical event that had made the Philippines famous for its peaceful people power revolution. The peaceful revolution has showed the world that it is possible to topple a dictatorship without any weapon, except unity, persistence and an intense desire for change.

The unveiling of H.E. Sin’s monument was attended by Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim, Members of the Catholic clergy and His Excellency President Ninoy Aquino, with Aquino’s family in attendance.  The monuments of late President Corazon Aquino and Benigno Aquino II, stand proudly beside the Cardinal’s monument.

It can be remembered that the key personalities that initiated the People Power were then Defense Minister Enrile, Fidel Ramos and Cardinal Sin. Corazon Aquino had consolidated the Filipino people by going against strongman Ferdinand Marcos.

Through Cardinal Sin‘s request Filipinos from all walks of life; religious persons, the wealthy and the poor formed a human barricade for Enrile, Ramos and the soldiers who have holed up in Aguinaldo, to prevent imminent bloodshed.

The themes of the speeches were about continuing the fight against corruption, democracy and poverty. Aquino said: “Hawak natin ang susi ng pagbabago.” (We hold the key towards change,) emphasizing that change comes only when individuals cooperate.
