Philippines bet Maria Venus Raj may win Miss Universe 2010

In less then 24 hours from now, the Miss Universe 2010 beauty pageant grand coronation will start and one lucky candidate will be chosen among the 80 candidates. All of them are now gathered at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, and are preparing very hard for tomorrow’s big event.

But in my personal opinion, Philippines bet Maria Venus Raj may win as the Miss Universe 2010 and this is not just a wild guess. Although I am a fellow Filipino who wishes nothing but the best for his countrymen, I also learned that she is really a very strong candidate.

According to the poll sponsored by Miss Universe Organization (MUO), Venus Raj has been consistently on top of the online popularity poll. She also remains as the top pick for Ms Universe 2010 with a rating of 3.58. Meanwhile, Miss Bolivia Claudia Arce Lemaitre is on the second spot with a 3.00 rating; and Miss Venezuela Marelisa Gibson ranked third with a rating of 2.93.

Last Thursday, the whole world saw Venus Raj as she stood out in her cat walk during the preliminary night which was also held at Madalay Bay. She received the loudest applause from the audience among the candidates when they introduced themselves.

Apparently, her dreams of being a Miss Universe candidate did not come as easy as others had. It can be remembered that on March 29, 2010, she was dethroned as Binibining Pilipinas Universe 2010 by the Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc (BPCI) due to “inconsistencies” between her birth certificate and the personal account of her birth.

But on April 10, 2010, BPCI announced that her crown will be returned to her provided that she will secure a valid Philippine passport. Then on May 19, 2010, a Philippine passport was issued to her by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) which legally confirmed her Filipino citizenship.

This made Venus Raj as the first-ever dethroned Binibining Pilipinas winner to have successfully re-gained the title.

By the way, Maria Venus Bayonita Raj started joining various beauty contests at the age of 17. She was born out of wedlock born on July 7, 1988 in Doha, Qatar to a Filipino mother and an Indian father. After her parents separated, she taken to Bato, Camarines Sur, in Bicol, Philippines and was registered by an aunt as Philippine-born.

But besides having an enchanting beauty, Venus Raj got brains too. She graduated in Bicol University in Albay finishing a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications Arts, major in Journalism as cum laude.

Meanwhile, BPCI head Stella Marquez-Araneta, who flew to Las Vegas a few days ago to give Venus moral support said the “she has a good fighting chance.”

Incidentally, Miss Universe 2010 grand coronation night will be aired tomorrow August 23, 2010 live at 9:30 am on ABS-CBN, with primetime telecast also tomorrow at 6:30 pm on Velvet [SkyCable Channel 53] and at 9:30 pm on Studio 23.

If Venus Raj shall be crowned as Miss Universe 2010, she will be the third Filipina to win the title along with Gloria Diaz (1969) and Margie Moran (1963).

With this, I urge all Filipinos to continuously pray for Venus Raj to win the Miss Universe 2010 title.

Mabuhay ka, Venus!
