Manila, Philippines – The Azkals, Philippines’ football team, won the first round for the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers by beating Brave Reds of Sri Lanka on Sunday, July 03, 2011.

As noted on local news that day, Philippine Azkals won against Sri Lanka, 4-0 (aggregate score: 5-1), and became the first Philippine football team to make it for the second round of FIFA World Cup.

The Philippines-Sri Lanka football match, which was held at the Rizal Memorial Stadium, was watched by thousands of local football fans despite the heavy rain.

Phil Younghusband, who was injured in their first match against Sri Lanka held on Wednesday in Colombo which ended in a draw (1-1), scored two goals while Chieffy Caligdong and Angel Guirado had one goal each.

According to reports, Caligdong scored the first goal for the Azkals in the 18th minute to put the Philippines in the lead, (1-0) and Phil Younghusband scored the second goal on the 42nd minute.

On the second half, Guirado scored the third goal for the Azkals in 50th minute while Younghusband scored again on the 56th minute via a penalty kick, with the Philippines winning the game.

The historical event for the country was attended by several local officials and personalities including Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim, ABS-CBN Chairman and CEO Eugenio Lopez III and actress Angel Locsin, rumored girlfriend of Phil Younghusband.

Later, President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III or PNoy congratulated the Azkals, noting that the entire nation was thrilled by their victory and wished the best of luck for their next game, which will be against Kuwait on Saturday, July 23.
