With 500 million users, Paul Butler, an intern of the engineering team of Facebook was able to create a world map using friendships at Facebook, December 14, 2010.

Based on the users’ and their friends’ place of origin, Butler was able to digitally create an incredible map that shows borders of countries using the most popular social networking site.

According to Butler, “I found a way to stimulate the effect I wanted. I defined weights for each pair of cities as a function of the distance between them and the number of friends between them.”

China and a few other countries which do not use the social website are understandably not visible in this “Map of Relationships.

Here is the awesome map as created by the ingenuity of Paul Butler.
