Oreo outage tweet goes viral, 2013 Super Bowl blackout used as an advantage to promote Twitter ad (Photo)

The so-called ‘Oreo outage tweet’ used the 2013 Super Bowl blackout as an advantage to promote their product. Oreo, being one of the advertisers during the Big Game this Sunday, February 3, is not worried despite the 34-minute power outage. Instead they created a Twitter ad, as shown in the photo below.

According to Buzzfeed on Sunday night, Oreo (@Oreo) tweeted “Power out? No problem.” at 8:48 p.m. ET, along with a photo of their ad with a caption, “You can still dunk in the dark.” Within minutes, Oreo is winning tons of free ads, and will forever be thankful to 360i, the advertising agency behind the Oreo Twitter ad.

“We had a mission control set up at our office with the brand and 360i, and when the blackout happened, the team looked at it as an opportunity. Because the brand team was there, it was easy to get approvals and get it up in minutes.” 360i agency president Sarah Hofstetter told the report.

“The big question is, what happens when everything changes, when you go off script? That was where it got fun. You need a brave brand to approve content that quickly. When all of the stakeholders come together so quickly, you’ve got magic,” Hofstetter added, with the Oreo Twitter ad now enjoying over 14,400 retweets.

By the way, the Oreo Super Bowl commercial titled ‘Whisper Fight,’ as shown in the video below, is also making waves online, which shows people having a whisper debate inside a library, and “fighting” over Oreo cookies. Apparently, the “brawl” started when a man said that Oreo Cookie is better than Oreo Creme, but another man insists that it is the other way around.
