Oprah Winfrey has finally launched the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN), her new 24-hour cable channel network on Saturday, January 1, 2011, at 12 noon EST, according to international news sites.  The launching date came at a rare date of 1-1-11 for the number one noontime show host. OWN will initially be available to more than 80 million homes.

The launching of OWN came smoothly with a special preview hosted by Winfrey herself. OWN has lined up several programs that will feature celebrity hosts that include former British royal Sarah Ferguson and country singer Shania Twain and more.

The new cable network, OWN, will be broadcasting a total of 600 hours of original fare during the first year. It hopes to capitalize on the huge following of Winfrey during her syndicated “The Oprah Winfrey Show” which she ended this spring after 25 years.

It was a simple launching for OWN, as the idea is to create interest to viewers and keep them coming back regularly. Here is part of Oprah Winfrey‘s statement during OWN‘s special preview:

I wanted to take the ideals of great television that we’ve established on the ‘Oprah’ show and bring them to you through a variety of new shows 24/7. Every minute of this network has been hand-selected by me for you, the viewers.

There are so many things happening here at OWN, and we’re just getting started.

Every day, here’s what I’m hoping — that you will find something here to inspire you.

Here are some of the upcoming shows on OWN cable network:

  • Saturday night – “Behind the Scenes: The Oprah Show Final Season”: 25-episode reality series that will enable the viewers to know “Oprah” during the time that it is heading to an end.
  • Sunday – OWN will have a series that will feature prominent people that include Diane Sawyer, Simon Cowell, Jay-Z and Condoleezza Rice.
  • Monday – “In the Bedroom with Dr. Laura Berman”: a show that will provide counseling for couples having problems with their sex life.
  • Friday – “Your OWN Show: Oprah’s Search for the Next TV Star”: The show will have 10 contestants that will compete for a hosting job on an OWN show of his or her own creation. The finalists were selected through an online audition that attracted more than 9,500 hopefuls.

OWN is a joint venture of Harpo Inc. and Discovery Communication, which will replace Discovery Health network. The 24-hour cable network is based in Los Angeles.
