Om Yun Chol sets new Olympic record in Weightlifting at London 2012

A new Olympic lift record was reportedly set by Om Yun Chol at the 2012 London Olympics on Sunday, July 29, 2012 at the ExCel Hall, Olympic Park.

The 20-year-old Om, from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea won the gold medal in the men’s 56kg clean and jerk weightlifting event on day two of the XXX Olympiad, according to a report at London 2012 website. He was able to raise 168kg, one kg more than the previous record set by Halil Mutlu of Turkey in the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

The 168kg by Om equals Mutlu‘s record set at the 2001 European Championships.

Pre-tournament favourite Wu Jingbiao of China took the silver medal and Valentin Hristov of Azerbaijan claimed the bronze medal.
