Former Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory was elected as North Carolina‘s first Republican governor in 20 years on Tuesday, November 6, 2012, international news sites reported that day.

McCrory, a former seven-term Charlotte mayor, defeated Lt. Gov. Walter Dalton. He delivered his acceptance speech at The Westin Charlotte at around 9 pm.

“We won the right way. We’re going to govern together… We’re going to bring this state together,” McCrory reportedly told his supporters Tuesday night.

McCrory‘s win came after he lost the governor’s race to Democrat Bev Perdue four years ago.

“Not many people are given a second chance, and I got a second chance,” McCrory was quoted as saying by the Associated Press.
