According to Bloomberg on Wednesday, August 22, 2012, a person with knowledge of the matter told them that Verizon plans to sell the new Nokia smartphone with Microsoft Windows 8 software within this year, which will be the first Windows phone to be sold by Verizon since May of 2011.
As noted in the report, the person, who wishes to remain anonymous, said that Verizon is not being expected to be a part of that event, where Nokia will discuss Lumia brand of Windows phones. Verizon is now offering only a single Windows phone device, the HTC Trophy.
“Nokia has had a difficult time breaking in to the U.S. market. Landing on the Verizon network is a positive development. It doesn’t solve the problem, but it is a big step in the right direction.” Charlie Wolf, a Needham & Co. analyst in New York, was quoted in the report.
As of this writing, Verizon and Nokia have not yet released any official statement on the release of the Windows 8 phone. Sprint CEO Dan Hesse reportedly said that it is too early for them to say if they will also support Windows phones, while Unity3D developer Unite Technologies has just announced its support.
