Nissan NV200 to be the next New York City taxi, after winning Taxi of Tomorrow competition

Nissan NV200 is being set to be the next New York City taxi, which was chosen as the winner of the recent ‘Taxi of Tomorrow‘ competition.

As reported at New York City’s official website on Tuesday, May 3, 2011, New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg announced that NV200 will be the next taxi of New York City.

NV200, which was designed by Nissan North America, Inc, will be New York City‘s next taxi starting about 2013, after Nissan Motor Co. won a 10-year-$1 billion to the city of New York.

According to the report, New York City is now its way to enter the final negotiations with Nissan to provide NV200 for the city, which the car is being noted to be the first of its kind.

NV200 was said to be safest taxi in New York City, as it will be the first taxi in the city with passenger airbags and the first one to pass the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) crash testing.

In addition, NV200 promises to bring comfort to the driver and its passengers by having a wider passenger seat, a transparent roof and a mobile phone charging station.

“We started this process to leverage our taxi industry’s purchasing power to get the highest quality taxi, one that that can expand and redefine the legendary image of New York City taxicabs.” Mayor Bloomberg said on the press conference.

“The new taxis will be custom-designed to meet the specific demands of carrying 600,000 passengers a day in New York City traffic and the vehicle meets the top priorities identified by the public in our on-line survey.” The mayor added.

Among other notable officials present in the press conference are Deputy Mayor Stephen Goldsmith, Taxi and Limousine Commissioner David Yassky and Nissan America Chairman Carlos Tavares.
