Thousands of people from around the world gathered in midtown Manhattan on Sunday, April 24, 2011, to participate in the traditional New York Easter Parade in New York City, international news reported.

It is not just a typical Easter parade but also an Easter Bonnet Festival with some zany attire worn by more creative participants. Kids and animals can also be seen wearing their colorful hats to participate on the said event.

Reports said that the parade is a tradition which started as a 19th century gathering of New York‘s social elite after the Civil War in 1866.

“This was once for rich New Yorkers, but it’s morphed into all kinds of people having a good time,” said Barry Brown, who works for a New York nonprofit organization.

The Easter parade got underway on Fifth Avenue around 10 a.m. and wrapped up by 4 p.m.

Here are some of the photos during the Eastern Parade and Easter Bonnet Festival in New York City.
