As noted at The Hollywood Reporter (THR) on Tuesday, February 28, 2012, Viacom president and CEO Philippe Dauman announced that day the release of the new SpongeBob movie.

“We will be releasing a SpongeBob movie at the end of 2014, which will serve to start off or be one of our films that starts off our new animation effort,” Dauman was quoted in the report, telling a Deutsche Bank media and telecom investor conference in Palm Beach, Florida via webcast.

Apparently, Paramount PicturesViacom also released the first SpongeBob film back in November 2004 and was said to have grossed $85.4 million in the US and $54.7 million abroad, which was directed by its creator Stephen Hillenburg.

That film featured the voices of Tom Kenny, Bill Fagerbakke, Clancy Brown, Rodger Bumpass, Mr. Lawrence, Scarlett Johansson, Alec Baldwin, and Jeffrey Tambor; with David Hasselhoff appearing as himself, not animated.

Apparently, the move comes after Paramount announced the formation of its Paramount Animation last July with a target of one release beginning in 2014, with its president David Stainton resigning last week.

As of this writing, Paramount has not released further details on the upcoming SpongeBob movie but Mr. Dauman noted in the conference that the company is now focusing on using social media to promote, market, and distribute content via digital delivery.
