The Louisville Cardinals captured the another national basketball championships after an 82-76 victory over the Michigan Wolverines during the Finals of the 2013 NCAA Tournament at the Georgia Dome, Atlanta on Monday, April 8, 2013. It was the Cardinals‘ third national championship and its first since 1986.
A Louisville team obviously motivated by the injured Kevin Ware, overcame a 12-point lead by Michigan in the first half to complete its dramatic run for the 2013 National Championship.
Cardinals head coach Rick Pitino had a historical night by becoming the first NCAA coach to win two national titles in two different schools. Pitino won his first NCAA Championship with the University of Kentucky.
Luke Hancock, named as the most outstanding player, led Louisville with 22 points. Hancock scored four straight 3-pointers to wipe out the Wolverines lead. Peyton Siva added 18 points and Chane Behanan scored 15 for the Cardinals.
Michigan‘s Trey Burke had a game high 24 points. Freshman Spike Albrecht surprisingly contributed 17 points for the Wolverines.
It was a double celebration for Pitino after being announced as a member of the latest Hall of Fame class early in the day.
The top-seeded Cardinals ended the tournament with a 35-5, win-loss record while the Wolverines had a 31-8 slate.
