NBA All Star Weekend 2012 started on Friday, February 24, 2012 in Orlando, Florida with the BBVA Rising Stars Challenge 2012 between Team Chuck and Team Shaq. Cleveland‘s rookie point guard, Kyrie Irving, was perfect from the three point area and helped Team Chuck win over Team Shaq, 146-133, according to a report at on.

Irving scored 34 points on 8 for 8 from beyond the arc. Paul George of Indiana added 23 points.

Cleveland‘s Tristan Thompson top scored for Team Shaq with 20 points. Jeremy Lin, rising point guard of the New York Knicks, only scored two points in four shot attempts. Lin played just nine minutes in his first All Star Weekend appearance.

The Rising Stars Challenge is the NBA All Star Weekend‘s showcase of players who are in their first and second year in the league. Just like the previous games, there was no real defensive effort throughout. Instead, players were in a fast-paced mode and played in open-court while showcasing aerial and dunking skills.

Maurice Cheeks, Team Chuck co-head coach explained that “It’s what All-Star games are, there’s not a lot of defense.”.

Team Shaq co-head coach Ron Adams said that “There were a lot of dunks. I think the guys had fun. I hope we didn’t set a Guinness Book of World Records record for dunks given, but it was a fun game. Interesting game.”
