According to the announcement of NATO on their official website, the incident took place at around 9:30 a.m (local time) during training flight based out of the Zokniai Air Base in northern Lithuania.

As noted on the report, the French Mirage fighter has been slightly damaged and the pilot was still able to land safely while the two pilots of Lithuanian plane ejected successfully before it hit the ground.

Apparently, no one was seriously hurt but the Lithuanian plane pilots landed in a Rekyva lake in the Siauliai region and are currently under medical supervision.

The L-39 military aircraft crashed in a rural area but NATO emphasized that the landing did not result to further damage to any property or civilian for that matter.

“We regret this incident. We do not know all the circumstances, an investigation has started.” Lithuanian Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius was quoted on reports.

“We can only state with relief that casualties were avoided. Unfortunately, incidents like this sometimes happen.” He added, as NATO said air training over the Baltic states will still continue.
