According to international news sites on Thursday, June 23, 2011, Naki’o became the first dog in the world to be given four prosthetic paws that allow him to run again.

Apparently, Naki’o, a Red Heeler, was only 5 weeks old when he was left along with his siblings, by a family who abandoned their foreclosed home.

Later, all of Naki’o’s paws were cut off due to frostbite but OrthoPets, a pet prosthetics company in Denver, outfitted him with a complete set of prosthetic paws.

As noted at IncredibleFeatures.net, Naki’o’s prosthetic paws were designed and by Orthopets founder Martin Kaufmann, with the back legs being the first ones to have been fitted with prosthetics.

Veterinary technician Christie Tomlinson was noted to have organized a project to pay for Naki’o’s back legs while Orthopets made the front prosthetic paws free of charge.

“Naki’o can now not only chase after a ball with other dogs, but he can beat them to the catch!” Tomlinson was quoted saying on the report.
