A mysterious orange goo showed up on the shores of the village of Kivalina in Alaska, several international news sites reported on Thursday, August 4, 2011.

According to reports, the unknown orange-colored substance is not man-made and not a petroleum substance.

The village was said to be requesting an algae expert from the University of Alaska Fairbanks to investigate the substance.

City Administrator Janet Mitchell reportedly said that the substance was also seen in some of the residents’ rain buckets. Residents were reportedly dumping the water collected in their rain buckets because of the unusual color.

One of the residents, Mida Swan, took some pictures of the mysterious substance. Swan reportedly said that when she dipped her hand into the substance, she did not smell anything odd.
