A mysterious missile was seen across the sky off Southern California coast last Monday night. It was caught by a local TV station’s helicopter camera. It was reported that the trail was visible from Los Angeles. It was about 35 miles out to sea north of Catalina Island, the station’s helicopter crew estimated.

Senior Pentagon and Navy officials were contacted by NBC News. The officials informed them that they did not know who launched the missile.

“It could be a test firing of an intercontinental ballistic missile from a submarine to demonstrate, mainly to Asia, that we can do that,” Roberth Ellsworth, a former deputy secretary of defense and ambassador to NATO said when asked by KCBS News, emphasizing that he was just purely speculating.

It was also reported that officials were taking into account the possibility that the mysterious missile could be a “commercial launch of some kind,” or that a device capable of creating such missile-like imagery were built by amateurs.
