According to local news sites that day, the MV Trans Asia Malaysia ship left Cebu at around 6 p.m. (local time) on Saturday and is being expected to arrive at Iloilo at 8 a.m. the next morning.

However, PCG chief Vice Admiral Ramon Liwag told reports that the ship’s captain reportedly called to abandon ship at around 6:00 am (local time) on Sunday.

Apparently, the ship was said to have tilted to its right side due to strong waves of the waters and sank off the coasts in Cadiz, Negros Occidental and Ajuy, Iloilo.

The PCG noted that the around 160 passengers of the MV Trans Asia ship, which is being operated by Trans Asia Shipping Lines, were transferred to the nearby ships including MV Filipinas Cebu.

As of this writing, the PCG is still investigating the real reason why the ship sank, but initial reports say that overloading is not being considered since the ship’s capacity is 500 passengers.
