Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney recently told a small group of wealthy donors about his idea on US President Barack Obama‘s voters, which was secretly taken, as shown in the video below. The video created stir among observers, and Romney later defended his statement.

As noted by political news site Mother Jones on Monday, September 17, 2012, which exclusively revealed the Romney video, the former Massachusetts governor spoke during a private fundraiser meeting last May 17, held at private equity manager Marc Leder‘s home in Boca Raton, Florida.

According to the report, a source provided them the video and confirmed its authenticity. Images on the video were made blurred to protect the identity of the source. The date and location were only revealed later when the restriction was lifted.

“There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what.” Mitt Romney said, replying to a question from donor on how he thinks he can win over Obama in the upcoming presidential election this coming November.

“All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it. That that’s an entitlement.” Romney added.

“And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what…These are people who pay no income tax. Forty-seven percent of Americans pay no income tax…And so my job is is not to worry about those people.” Romney continued.

But only hours after the Romney video was released, hashtags #47percent and #RomneyEncore went trending at Twitter. Netizens voiced out mixed reactions, and most of them criticized the presidential candidate, who later defended his statement, saying that they were not “elegantly stated.”

“I am sure I can state it more clearly and effectively than I did in a setting like that…I am talking about a political process of drawing people in my campaign. My campaign is about helping people take more responsibility,” Romney was quoted at Politico.com, telling to reporters during a fundraiser at Segerstrom Center for the Arts.
