Microsoft launched Windows Embedded Automotive 7

Microsoft Corp. on Tuesday, launched Windows Embedded Automotive 7, its latest version of operating system dedicated for cars, according to the press release posted on Microsoft’s website.

The announcement was made at the SAE Convergence 2010 Conference and Exhibition, in which the said automotive communication software was developed to provide integrated services for communication, entertainment, navigation and information of car owners.

With this Windows Embedded Automotive 7, car makers and suppliers are said to have access to Microsoft’s latest tools and technology, which allows them to quickly create in-vehicle experiences that are easier to use and more engaging for drivers and passengers.

Its key features include speech commands, hands-free Bluetooth phone communications touch input, advanced dashboard systems for access to music, maps, third-party apps and navigation, and streamlined connectivity with other devices.

Microsoft also said that Windows Embedded Automotive 7 gives car manufacturers the ability to develop two-dimensional and three dimensional graphics and includes upgraded speech recognition technology that allows users to respond to text messages with voice commands.

The Windows Embedded Automotive software was first introduced when Ford launched Sync in 2007, its voice-controlled in-car communication system.

Since then, other automakers including Fiat and Hyundai have used Microsoft’s software system to develop similar communication systems.

Nissan Leaf, a Japanese electric car which will be launched this December also used this software version to develop touch screen information hub, Microsoft added.
