Michel Martelly “Sweet Micky” officially declared as Haitian president

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti – Finally, Michel Martelly, also known as “Sweet Micky” was officially declared today, as Haiti’s next President. International reports says that Haitian electoral commission spokesman Pierre Thibault said that Martelly won the presidency with 67.7 percent of the votes, defeating the former first lady Mirlande Manigat.

Martelly will be inaugurated on May 14. The newly elected president is now faced with great task in Haiti’s recovery from last year’s magnitude-7 earthquake.

Election officials also released the final results of legislative elections. The political party of the outgoing President Rene Preval got the majority in the Senate.

Martelly stressed the need to tackle the cholera epidemic that has claimed more than 4,700 lives since October.

Meanwhile 53 members of the U.S. Congress wrote to Clinton urging her to work Haitian government to provide rapid support for the displaced people lacking adequate shelter, water, sanitation and security.
