Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte‘s gold medal chase at the 2012 London Olympics got underway on Saturday, July 28, 2012. Lochte won his first gold in the 400 individual medley but Phelps surprisingly finished out of the medal podium.
The 14-time gold medalist suffered his first Olympic loss in eight years, according to reports by several London Olympic coverage. The only time Phelps did not won a medal in the event was during his Sydney Olympic debut.
With Phelps failing to win a medal, Thiago Pereira(Brazil) and Kosuke Hagino(Japan) finished in second and third, respectively. Phelps has won the 400 IM for the past two Summer Olympic games.
Lochte won the 400 IM in 4:05.18, over a second behind the record set by Phelps in the last Beijing Olympics. The American was on his way to a record-breaking swim but failed to deliver in the freestyle leg.
The loss of Phelps, who is three medals away from tying Larisa Latynina for most medals won in the Olympics, reportedly surprised a lot of swimming event followers. Phelps was expected to at least win a silver in the 400 IM.
The heavily favored Phelps is expected to win several gold medals in the upcoming team relay and butterfly events.
