According to CNN on Sunday, August 26, 2012, a source close to Sanford provided them pictures of the couple, along with a statement from Mark Sanford, who disappeared from the public and his then-wife Jenny Sanford for almost a week back in June 2009, and admitted later that he cheated on his wife.
“Yes, we are engaged, and I’m both happy and excited for what that means, I have long expressed my feelings for her, she’s a wonderful person. My closest friends have met and love her, and I look forward to introducing her to still many more that have yet to do so.” Sanford was quoted at CNN exclusively.
As noted at Argentinean news site Clarin.com on Friday, Mark made his marriage proposal to Maria Belen last Wednesday noon inside the Bella Italia Grill, an Italian restaurant in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Sanford reportedly surprised Chapur with an engagement ring with the help of a waiter, who gave her a “prize.”
Sanford, who became the governor of South Carolina from 2003 to 2011, disappeared from the public and his wife from June 18 until June 24, 2009, and later surfaced admitting that he has an affair outside of his marriage to Jenny, whom she married in 1989 and had four sons. She later filed for divorce, which was finalized in March 2010.
“I’ve been unfaithful to my wife. I developed a relationship with what started as a dear, dear friend from Argentina. I want to take full responsibility for the moral failure that led us to this tragic point.” The 52-year old former South Carolina governor was quoted in his press conference that time.
“Jenny is a great person, and has been a remarkable wife, mother, and First Lady.” Sanford added, who was later being poised to run for president this coming November 2012 election but later announced that he is not running and will instead dedicate his life in the private sector after his term.
