Marine Corps MemorialThe annual Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) is a 26.2-mile marathon held in Arlington, VA and the nation’s capital. It starts at Arlington National Cemetery and finishes at the Iwo Jima Memorial nearby. This Sunday, October 31, 2010 is the 35th Marine Corps Marathon event.

For this year’s event, a tighter security will be put in place due to several shooting incidents at Marine Corps facilities in the Washington area recently.

According to reports, someone fired shots at a Marine Corps museum in the Washington area. It is believed that the same person is also responsible for three similar incidents. The FBI said that the gunman does not seem to be trying to hurt anyone, but he appears to be targeting locations associated with the Marines.

The shooter is probably a Marine or someone with grudge against the Marines, John Perren, acting head of the Washington Field Office said. “It may be that he feels he’s been wronged by the Corps in his professional or personal life,” Perren was quoted saying.

“We are going to run this race taking into account the incidents that have taken place,” said Col. Dan Choike, commander at Quantico.
