Makati City, Philippines – A passenger bus traveling northbound along Epifanio delos Santos Avenue (EDSA) in Makati City exploded at around 2 p.m. (local time) today, January 25, 2011, with 2 casualties and at least 17 others were wounded.

According to local news, a Newman Goldliner air-conditioned bus (plate number TXJ-710) was near the corner EDSA and Buendia Avenue, near the Metro Rail Transit (MRT) station, when it exploded.

National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) chief Nicanor Bartolome told the news that two people were found dead, while at least 17 others were injured and immediately brought to the nearest hospitals, particularly in Ospital ng Makati and St. Luke’s Medical Center in Taguig City.

Meanwhile, Makati Mayor Junjun Binay, who was reported to be coincidentally near the area when the explosion occurred, immediately rushed to the site and talked with the police.

In an initial report, police said that a big hole was seen under the bus after the explosion, and speculations were raised that the explosives were probably placed under the seat in the mid-section of the bus.

As of this writing, the type of explosives and identity of the suspect(s) is yet to be known as authorities are still doing thorough investigation.
