Makati building accident: 9 workers killed after falling from Eton Residence construction

Makati City, Philippines – An accident happened in a building in Makati at about 11:45 a.m. on Thursday, January 27, 2011, wherein reports say that 9 workers were killed after they fell from Eton Residence, which is under construction.

According to a report from ABS-CBN ANC Channel, nine workers fell from the 32nd floor from Eton Residence and landed on the 7th floor of the building, and died later, which is located at the corner of Paseo de Roxas and Gallardo streets in Makati City.

Makati Mayor Junjun Binay confirmed to the news that the construction workers were installing glass windows when the scaffolding they were standing on fell apart.

A report at Inquirer says that initial investigation made by Bureau of Fire department revealed that the gondola where the workers aboard can only hold two passengers.

The mayor also told the news that he ordered the construction work to be stopped, and required the authorities to conduct an immediate investigation and to make sure that the construction workers are safe before the work will resume.

Meanwhile, Eton Properties issued a statement after the accident, and was also posted at ABS-CBN News website.

“The management of Eton Properties is trying to determine the facts and exact cause of the accident. We will be issuing an official statement later. Our immediate concern is to bring the workers to the nearest hospital so they can be given emergency medical attention.”
