A lost da Vinci portrait, entitled “Head of a Young Girl in Profile to the Left in Renaissance Dress” was auctioned at Christie‘s auction house for over $21,000, according to reports by several international news sites on Monday, October 17, 2011.

The lost da Vinci painting was reportedly created by Leonardo da Vinci for the wedding book of the daughter of the Duke of Milan.

Art historian Martin Kemp believes that the lost da Vinci artwork may have been taken from a 500-year-old family history book of the Duke of Milan. According to an issued statement, Kemp said that the lost da Vinci portrait “came from a book, you have the stitch holes and can see the knife cut. Finding it is a miracle in a way. I was amazed.” He added that “When doing historical research on 500-year-old objects … you hardly get the circle completed in this way.”
