A live tiger cub inside a suitcase was found at Thai airport.

The two-month old tiger cub was seen hidden inside a suitcase filled with stuffed toys, but was spotted as it went through a luggage X-ray.

TRAFFIC, a non-profit organization said on Thursday that staff at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport contacted authorities afterward.

The suitcase belongs to a 31-year-old Thai national, but her identity was not revealed publicly. She was scheduled to board a flight for Iran, but could not explain why the tiger cub was in her bag.

DNA samples were taken from the cub, which has been sent to a wildlife rescue center in Ratchaburi province. The result will help authorities to discover whether it was born in captivity or seized from the wild.

TRAFFIC‘s deputy regional director for Southeast Asia Chris R. Shepherd commended authorities for discovering the smuggling attempt, but said the case showed a need for more monitoring and tougher punishments.

“If people are trying to smuggle live tigers in their check-in luggage, they obviously think wildlife smuggling is something easy to get away with and do not fear reprimand,” Shepherd said. “Only sustained pressure on wildlife traffickers and serious penalties can change that.”
