Len McCluskey Elected as Unite General Secretary

According to international news, Len McCluskey was voted as general secretary of Unite, UK‘s biggest trade union.

McCluskey garnered 101,000 votes to earn the right to take over the top post from joint general secretaries Tony Woodley and Derek Simpson. Jerry Hicks was second in the election with 52,000 votes, Les Bayliss was third with 46,000 votes, and Gail Cartmail came fourth with 39,000 votes.

Before being elected as Unite‘s general secretary, McCluskey has held on to several key positions with  Unite and the Transport and General Workers Union.

The formal announcement of McCluskey‘s assumption of Unite‘s top post will be held on Wednesday‘s union executive meeting.

Unite was formed in 2007 with the merger of  Britain‘s’ leading unions, the Transport and General Workers Union and Amicus. It now has more than 1.4 million members.
