Largest Emerald In The World Found In Boyaca, On Display In Colombia (Photo)

The world’s largest emerald was put on display in Colombia, for the first time since it was discovered 12 years ago in Boyaca, according to a BBC report on Saturday, June 18, 2011.

Based on the report, the stone weighs around 2.5 kilos and has 15,000 carats. The report added that the emerald value was considered immeasurable, however, others approximate its value around $100,000. The emerald has been kept in its original form since its discovery.

After it was found in the Boyaca area about 47 miles (75 km) north of Bogota, the giant stone was put on display in several countries around the world. According to reports, the emerald was never displayed in Colombia after its discovery due to security reasons.
