Kyrie Irving of the Cleveland Cavaliers has been chosen as the 2012 NBA Rookie of the Year, according to reports by several international sports sites on Sunday, May 13, 2012.

Irving, the NBA‘s top draft pick in 2011, plays point guard for Cleveland.

The 20-year-old Cavaliers‘ play maker led all first-year players in scoring with an average of 18.5 points per game.

Reports say that Irving will receive the Rookie of the Year award on Tuesday, May 15. The complete results of the voting will also be published on that date.

The Rookie of the Year selection was reportedly published first by ESPN.com and The Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Minnesota guard Ricky Rubio, who suffered a season ending knee injury, is reportedly Irving‘s closest rival for the Rookie of the Year award.

Irving joins 2012 NBA MVP LeBron James as the only Cavaliers player to win the Rookie of the Year award.
