As announced live on local TV that day, the SET proclaimed Koko Pimentel III as the 12th elected senator and noted that he won over Zubiri, reversing the latter’s proclamation by Commission on Elections (COMELEC).

Back in 2007, the COMELEC declared Zubiri as the 12th senator and announced that he had 11,005,866 votes while Pimentel had only 10,987,347 votes, or about 20,000-votes difference.

Koko Pimentel, who ran under the opposition party, filed an election protest against the victory of Zubiri, who ran under the administration of then-President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

As reported earlier, “Migz” Zubiri resigned from his post last August 3 following the alleged fraud during in 2007 election, where he was declared winner as the 12th and the final senator being elected.

“Without admitting any fault and with my vehement denial of the alleged electoral fraud hurled against me, I am submitting my resignation as a duly elected Senator of the Republic of the Philippines.” Zubiri said earlier, who also pulled out his counter-protest later.

Meanwhile, newly-proclaimed Senator Koko Pimentel III told the press that he will take his oath on Monday, August 15, and hopes that his fellow senators will welcome him on his remaining term until 2013.
