The whale, named Tilikum, appeared in SeaWorld‘s show “Believe” on Wednesday morning in front of a crowd of thousands.

Tilikum has not appeared in any shows since February 24, 2010 after he pulled his trainer, Dawn Brancheau, into the water by her ponytail and shook her violently, eventually taking her life.

Animal rights activists are outraged with the decision.

SeaWorld‘s decision to recklessly put Tilikum back in its shows is irresponsible and dangerous for both Tilikum and their employees. It shows that SeaWorld really only cares about what’s best for its bottom line,” Ashley Byrne, senior campaigner for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) was quoted saying.

Meanwhile, SeaWorld Animal Training Curator Kelly Flaherty Clark was quoted saying that putting Tilikum back on the show is an important part of its physical, social and mental enrichment.
