Kathie Lee Gifford had an embarrassing moment during the live telecast of NBC‘s ‘Today‘ show on Wednesday, May 30, 2012, when she asked Hollywood actor Martin Short about his wife, as shown in the video below, not knowing that she passed away almost two years ago. A video of her apology is also available below.

As featured at NBC on Wednesday morning, Kathie Lee Gifford was doing an interview with Martin Short, who was then promoting his new movie “Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted“, and later asked him about his wife, Nancy Dolman, who died on August 21, 2010 from ovarian cancer.

“And you and Nancy have one of the greatest marriages of anybody in show business. How many years now for you guys?” Kathie asked Martin, who somehow did not know how to respond but kept his composure by replying, “We…married…36 years”.

“But you’re still like in love?” Kathie asks as her follow-up question to Martin, who replied, “Madly in-love”. Apparently, there were few more questions that were asked by the TV host to the 62-year old ‘Father of the Bride’ actor and their conversation went smoothly.

Later on the show, Gifford, 58, admitted her mistake and noted that Short told her during a commercial break that she probably did not know what happened to his wife. She also apologized to his family and to the audience as well, which she also did via her official Twitter account.

“I send my sincerest apologies to @MartinShort and his family. He handled situation w/enormous grace and kindness and I’m so grateful.” Kathie Lee (@KathieLGifford) tweeted right after the show.
