Juneteenth Annual Festivities Celebrated With Juneteenth Parade

Juneteenth festivities was celebrated in 39 states in the US with a parade on Saturday, June 18, 2011, according to reports on several international news sites.

The annual celebration of Juneteenth is in honor of the passage of the Emancipation Proclamation, that freed blacks from slavery. The proclamation was delivered on June 19, 1865 by Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger in Galveston at the end of the Civil War. Juneteenth celebration reportedly started in Texas.

Reports say that this years celebration in Austin features car and motorcycle events, and musical events of local artists.

On Friday night,  a jamboree carnival was held in Washington Jackson Elementary.

At the Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Comal Street, Juneteenth was greeted with street party, rainbow-colored candies for the children rained from the sky and over a dozen line ladies dance to the beat of African drums.
