Josh Ferrin and wife Tara discovered a large amount of money inside several boxes and a piece of cloth hanging in an attic door of his new house in Bountiful, Salt Lake City, according to reports by several international news sites on May 18, 2011.

Ferrin, an artist for the Deseret News in Salt Lake City, was walking into the house garage when he noticed the cloth in the attic door that contains rolls of cash.

He was able to find seven boxes, filled with cash, when he went up the attic using a ladder.

The money found by Ferrin is estimated to be around $45,000. He and his wife, Tara, and their children counted the bills but stopped when they reached $40,000.

Ferrin returned the money to Kay Bangerter, son of Arnold Bangerter, previous owner of the house who had worked as a biologist for the Utah Department of Fish and Game.

Below is Josh Ferrin‘s statement about the money he found and returned.

I’m not perfect, and I wish I could say there was never any doubt in my mind. We knew we had to give it back, but it doesn’t mean I didn’t think about our car in need of repairs, how we would love to adopt a child and aren’t able to do that right now, or fix up our outdated house that we just bought. But the money wasn’t ours to keep and I don’t believe you get a chance very often to do something radically honest, to do something ridiculously awesome for someone else and that is a lesson I hope to teach to my children.
