Jose Wejebe, host of Spanish Fly, died after his small plane crashed upon takeoff from the Southwest Florida airport, according to reports by several international news sites on Saturday, April 7, 2012.

Reports say that Wejebe‘s plane took off around 5 pm on Friday from the Everglades Airpark.

The Cuban-born host reportedly grew up in Miami and became a Key West charter captain.

He started his saltwater fishing show with ESPN in the 90’s. His Spanish Fly, considered as one of the best fishing show on television, was later transferred to Outdoor Channel.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) started its investigation at Everglades City on Saturday to determine the cause of Friday’s plane crash.

Reports say that Peter Knudson, a spokesman for the NTSB, explained that investigators will examine three areas — man, machine and environment.
