Jodi Bieber, a photographer based in South Africa won the World Press Photo Contest of the year 2010. Her picture depicts an Afghan woman whose nose and ears have been sliced off by her husband. The woman behind the photo was Bibi Aisha, an 18-year-old woman from Oruzgan province in Afghanistan, international news reported.

The jury members said that though the photo of Bibi was shocking, it addresses violence against women with a dignified image thus, it was chosen as the winner.

According to reports, the picture of Bibi Aisha was featured on the cover of Time magazine on August 2010. Bibi was rescued by the U.S. military and aid workers and now lives in the U.S. for counseling and reconstructive surgery.
