According to reports, tsunami waves reached Hawaii beaches Friday night and no major damage has been reported.

According to Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, Kauai was the first of the Hawaiian islands to be reached by the tsunami waves. Water rushed and covered the beaches in Waikiki but stopped short of the area’s high-rise hotels.

Waves about 3 feet were recorded in Kauai and Oahu, and 7 feet in Maui. According to officials, the waves would continue and could become larger.

Scientists warned that the first waves of the tsunami are not always the strongest. Residents along the coast should watch for strong currents and must follow the calls for evacuations.

“The tsunami warning is not over. We are seeing significant adverse activity, particularly on Maui and the Big Island. By no means are we clear in the rest of the state as well.” Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie was quoted saying.
