Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen Airport Tops List Of World’s Fastest Growing Airport

Sabiha Gökçen Airport in Istanbul topped the list of the world’s fastest growing airport in 2010, according to an August 1, 2011 published report at the official website of the Airports Council International (ACI).

ACI released its World Airport Traffic Report 2010 at the end of July this year. The traffic report evaluated the performance of over 1,300 airports in 157 countries around the world during the past year. Traffic around the world went up by 6.6 percent or a total of 5.04 billion passengers in 2010.

Istanbul’s Sabiha Gökçen Airport, completed its construction in 2009, traffic went up by 75 percent in 2010.

Campinas airport in Brazil is the world’s second-fastest growing airport, while Rio de Janeiro came in third place.

The ACI report added that Latin America and the Caribbean (13.2 percent) obtained the highest traffic growth, followed by the Middle East (12 percent), Asia-Pacific (11.3 percent), Africa (9.5 percent), Europe (4.3 percent) and North America (2.5 percent).

Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson in the US is reportedly the busiest airport in world. It was followed by Beijing, Chicago in the US, London Heathrow and Tokyo Haneda.
